U.S. navy veteran scam

The man who once rubbed shoulders with GOP political luminaries is  wanted by Ohio state authorities who say the $100 million he raised in the name of a charity for U.S. Navy veterans cannot be located.

He used the names Bobby Thompson and Ronnie Brittain, but authorities said that both were stolen identities. The U.S. Navy Veterans Association,his charity, ran its national headquarters in Washington, D.C., out of a post office box at a UPS store.
Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray blamed that this alleged con artist had done "in the charitable sphere what Bernie Madoff did in the investment sphere. It's shocking and discouraging and to think so many people wanted to give to veterans and in fact they were giving to this man and his sham organization."

Thompson collected around $100 million over the past decade from donors who thought they were contributing to a legitimate veterans service organization, according to Cordray, and 99 percent of the funds are now unaccounted for. He donated to mostly Republican prominent politicians, more than $200,000 to.

Adoption/wildlife scams

The adoption of children or animals over the internet is one of the most popular scam.  Mostly, the perpetrators of child adoption fraud  claim to be indigent parents unable to care for a child or members of the clergy working at a Cameroonian orphanage seeking a good home for a child.  Another versions of this fraud involve wildlife, including birds (often parrots), dogs and monkeys.  The scammers start to build a relationship with the victim by offering the fictitious child or animal for free, asking the victim to pay only a small amount to cover the cost of shipping.  This is followed by a string of additional requests, this time for more money due to ‘unforeseen expenses’, such as court costs, airport fees, customs duties, and medical costs.   The scammers will also claim that the fictitious baby or animal will be abandoned at the airport unless they are unable to pay a non-existent fee, and the victim will be threatened with the loss of thousands of dollars.

Americans need to be very cautious about sending money or traveling to Cameroon to adopt a child from an orphanage they have only heard about through e-mails. Cameroon does not have adoption agencies.  In general, any orphanage can release an orphan for adoption.  However,  to help in protecting themselves and the children from the possibility of fraud or other serious problems, prospective adoptive parents are advised to consider first the list of accredited orphanages available at the Ministry of Social Affairs.
